Mytech Culture Experience June 2013

This month we would like to reflect on our May value of "Practice both Confidence and Humility" by highlighting one of our Mytech team members who exemplifies this value every day – Kellen Lagoon. Kellen started at Mytech in the Depot position and over the last few years has demonstrated his ability to learn and also to take initiative when he identifies something that needs to be fixed. These qualities have led Kellen to be promoted to a field deployable resource on our managed services team.

"Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy."
- Norman Vincent Peale

Kellen is a solid team player, but he would never tell you that. What we have experienced with Kellen is that he does an exceptional job of listening to our customers and instilling confidence in them by efficiently resolving any problems they identify. Kellen always keeps his eyes open for other opportunities to improve organization, clean up messy cabling and in addition to solving problems; he works to make every thing look good when he is done too.

"Humility is like underwear, essential, but indecent if it shows"
- Helen Nielsen

Kellen also organized Mytech's first ever summer volleyball team – the Mytech Maulers and this year will be the third year that Kellen has been part of that new tradition. While I do not know this for certain, I am pretty sure that Kellen played a part in getting our team to enjoy their lunch breaks more by playing bocce ball in the summer and other games in our break room in the colder months. Kellen has both the confidence to initiate something new with the humility that you will never hear him boast about the positive impact he has had on our lives. Finally, Mytech would also like to congratulate Kellen as he is getting married later this month! We wish you happiness and good fortune – you deserve it!

"If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life. With confidence, you have won even before you have started."
- Marcus Garvey

Practice both confidence and humility. The incredible combination of confidence AND humility is what makes this value so impactful to Mytech. We all have our culture committee team to thank for defining and selecting this value to remain in the final list. The challenge any organization faces is that they have to choose to persist amongst the obstacles that inevitably exist in any industry, in any market and any of the myriad of other internal and external forces impacting your organization. To simply make the choice to forge ahead, to face the challenges it first takes some level of confidence that you will make it through, you will succeed. That vote of confidence in yourself is only one of the first actions and if you want to attract people to your cause over time, having a counter balance of humility will sure go a long way.

"Humility. To become truly great, one has to stand with people, not above them."
- Charles de Montesquieu

Looking back over the last half of Mytech's existence there has been one major shift in how we operated. We chose to open ourselves up to our peers across the country through a peer group called Heartland Technology Groups (www.HTGPeerGroups.com). Before our participation in HTG we as a leadership team had a lot of confidence, however we lacked in humility. Over the years of learning about other businesses, financial metrics, best practices etc. we realized how much we did not know. The last several years have been a very humbling, yet incredibly impactful experience and I am so thankful that Mytech has been able to be a part of HTG. Thank you, Arlin Sorensen, for founding HTG and having a significant positive impact on our lives.

"Confidence never comes from having all the answers; it comes from being open to all the questions."
- Earl Gray Stevens
