This month we would like to reflect on our July value of "Create fun and a little weirdness" by highlighting one of our Mytech team members who exemplifies this value every day – Sarah Hertz. Sarah has been with Mytech for a few years now and she started a tradition that is now one of our most looked forward to occurrences – Thursday Treats. Shortly after Sarah started she came in one day with snacks on a Thursday and invited everyone in the company to stop by the front desk around mid-morning for a quick, simple gathering to share the snacks she had brought in. Then next Thursday it happened again, and again etc. and now this gathering is now known as Thursday Treats and the tradition has been passed on to one of our newest members to the Mytech team – Leah. This tradition has been the way we have recognized individuals Birthdays by letting them pick the snack for the week, we welcome new team members with an addition to the Thursday treats tradition where we go around the room and introduce ourselves and share something that people probably do not know. Just recently we also presented a diaper "cake" to one of our team that was going to be having a baby. Sarah was and is part of Create Fun and a little weirdness and has been since before we officially had this as one of our core values. Thursday Treats are a huge part of "Create fun" yet that is only half of our value we must also have "a little weirdness" there too. Sarah has always brought to the office a passion for past times that many of us might call a little weird – things such as Comic Con, DnD or Dungeons and Dragons and the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Sarah could tell you many fantastic and fun stories about her friends and experiences at events like the ones mentioned above. The Culture Committee that defined our values last year specifically selected Create fun and a little weirdness as one of our values and Sarah Hertz lives this value with regard to how she is at the office, how she interacts with other staff and some of her favorite past times. Sarah, on behalf of Mytech we thank you for Creating fun and a little weirdness in our lives!
At the beginning of last year Mytech started the process of learning about and defining our culture which began with reading a book: Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh the CEO of Zappos.com. We gave a book to everyone in the company and asked them to read it and anyone who wished to participate could join a couple lunch meetings that we scheduled to discuss the book as a group. This process eventually led to the creation of the Mytech values that are now posted on our website on the "About Us" page: http://www.mytech.com/about-mytech.html. If you have read Delivering Happiness, then you are familiar with Zappos and some of their core values. If you have ever had the chance to go out to Las Vegas, NV where the Zappos corporate headquarters is and take one of their culture tours, you would have seen how Zappos Creates fun and a little weirdness in their environment. Several Mytech staff had the opportunity to do just that last year to experience first-hand how Zappos executed on their values – one of which is Create fun and a little weirdness. This value and what it meant to Zappos and the positive impact that it had on our Culture Committee is why this value was deliberately included in the defined Mytech values. We are a professional services organization who helps small businesses with technology and yet we want to make sure that we always seek ways to Create fun and a little weirdness in our daily lives. Some of the ways we exemplify this value is through our regular company events – we have a bowling night every year in May where randomly people will show up dressed in costumes. We have a Mytech volleyball team called the Mytech Maulers that plays in the summer on Tuesday evenings. We have monthly BBQ's when the weather cooperates enough to do so. We believe that spending time with your co-workers can be and is fun and that we have an obligation to fulfill our corporate value of Create fun and a little weirdness.
Thank you for taking the time to read about a fantastic Mytech team member – Sarah Hertz and for participating in part of the Mytech Culture Experience. I invite you to please join the team here at Mytech on our Culture Experience, so that together we can work to "Create fun and a little weirdness."
